Prospect Spotlight: Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees

Spencer Jones remains one of the more polarizing prospects in both scouting and the Bowman card market. At 6'7", 240 with plus athleticism, he showed a real swing/approach change in 2025 that produced an AA explosion—and then a tougher AAA reality where the power held and the swing-and-miss did too. We've tried to do an honest read anchored to this year’s performance and current card comps.

The AA run was thunderous (power + walks). In AAA, the power/speed stayed but the walk rate halved and the K% stayed extreme, pulling OBP down.

The power is major-league, the contact is not (yet). AAA pitchers challenged him and the walks did not hold. Generally, declining BB/K rate into AAA is a pretty big red flag for major league success.

3) Scouting Take (Present/Future)

  • Hit (20/30): Real bat speed, but long swing and chase create persistent whiff. Path/stance work helped in AA; but more tweaks might be required before he's ready for the majors.
  • Game Power (50/60) & Raw (70): Doesn’t need 100% hit unlock to produce 25+ HR power. EV profile supports it.
  • Run (60) / Field (40/45): Unusual speed for the frame; playable corner defense with some CF history.

4) Role, Timeline & Fit

  • Yankees context: Judge is the obvious locked-in corner bat long-term; left field could be an easy fit. Dominguez and other options do not seem like long-term answers, but the Yankees as we all know tend to make an offseason splash. Kyle Tucker, Bellinger and Luis Robert may be potential offseason targets.
  • Timeline: 2026 seems like the play, which is around when Judge came up as well. If Jones cannot get it together before then, it's not looking good long-term either way.

5) Sentiment & Market Buzz

  • AA surge drove national attention; AAA kept the conversation split: “unicorn tools, real risk.”
  • Most major outlets picked up on the increasing K rates, yet the market is still fairly elevated. The Yankees market always causes a bit of inflation, even if the prospect performance is not matching it.

6) Bowman Hobby Outlook

  • 2023 Bowman Chrome 1st Auto PSA 10 (base): Multiple late-Aug sales clustered ~$450–$550 ($549 on 8/27, $446 on 8/27, $450 on 8/23).
  • Refractor /499 PSA 10: Wide spread in late Aug (BO-accepted $350 on 8/24 and a separate $700 on 8/24). Condition/auction vs BIN timing matter.
  • Yellow /75 PSA 10: $1,425 (8/24).
  • Older MySlabs examples (context only): Speckle /299 PSA 10 $650, Atomic /100 PSA 10 $1,100 (early ’24).

Market read: Prices remain premium and volatile for a non-MLB bat due to Yankees pedigree. The AAA plate-discipline step back is the cap on a full breakout. A strong spring would lead to a surge in his market, but this is one of the riskier plays out there.

Closing Thoughts

Recommendation: Sell next spring training/call-up. Current prices do not justify new buys. Now is not the time to sell, if you are holding anything. September call-up was on the table previously but that window has closed.

Tools justify the hype; contact risk defines the value. If you’re collecting/investing, treat Jones as a high-variance power bet. RF regular with 30-HR upside is still on the table but so is a complete stall out as a top prospect.
